Slowly rediscovering my love for reading

· me

A guilty pleasure

I will confess that fantasy heists are my guilty pleasure. They’re mostly just fun and light hearted, and it takes near to no effort to understand the plot line. Bad guys steal things. Bad guys steal important thing. Thing will cause huge disaster. Bad guys fix.

Rinse and repeat. Different characters, but the same story.

The Tales of the Ketty Jay

Tired of waiting on a book from the “Big Three” of fantasy (Rothfuss, GRRM, Lynch), I decided to wash away the stench of the last genre I read (sci-fi). I think I took a total of five days to finish the entire series, reading it on the train ride and at night whilst attempting to sleep.
There was a time in high school during which I lamented the loss of reading as a pastime, especially as this was one of the most difficult periods of my life. I turned to social media as a way to cope.

Anyway, back to rambling.

I really liked this series and I am always biased in favor of fantasy heists. I was looking for something nasty and easy to read. My initial opinions of the main characters were admittedly not great, but I suppose it is because the pacing of the book is slightly awkward at first. The characters turned out to be likely enough. The author also likes to switch between character viewpoints. In this case Woodington does that flawlessly, and I was enthralled by the small shifts to the cat on board the Ketty Jay. I think this technique lends itself well to effective characterization, and I found myself interested in the sole “inanimate” character, Bess the Golem. I would’ve loved reading something from her POV.

One thing that I found tiring, especially after the second book was the tryst between Captains Frey and Dracken. I was yelling at both characters because almost everything was a RED FLAG. I would not want them to get back together. Very stupid.

Also the entire series lacked proper descriptions of what the airships actually looked like, so I wasn’t sure what they looked like. drawing of what I think they looked like

78/79 airships on a scale of 1 to 10 pirates.
